Defence analyst Sandeep Unnithan explains Iran’s unprecedented military offensive across West Asia, where one country has simultaneously targeted over a dozen nations within 72 hours. The strikes followed Operation Urgent Fury and Operation Roaring Line launched by the United States and Israel on 28th February, which assassinated Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the defence minister, and top military commanders. Iran retaliated by launching over 800 projectiles in 24 hours, striking US military bases across a 3,000-kilometre arc from Cyprus to Oman. Key targets include the US 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, Al Udeid base in Qatar, and installations in the UAE and Kuwait. Unnithan notes that Iran launched 137 missiles and 200 drones at the UAE alone, comparing this to Saddam Hussein’s 88 Scud missiles over one month in 1991. Three US F-15s were downed by friendly fire from a Kuwaiti Patriot battery. Even mediator Oman’s Duqm Port was struck.
