Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri, speaking exclusively to India Today from Beirut, warns that Israel’s operations in southern Lebanon amount to ‘ethnic cleansing’ and could create ‘another Gaza’. With over a million people displaced—nearly 20 per cent of Lebanon’s population—Mitri states that Israeli cabinet ministers themselves have compared their actions in southern Lebanon to Gaza. He describes the proposed buffer zone as ‘another name for occupation’ under international law. Mitri criticises Israeli airstrikes for ignoring principles of distinction and proportionality, noting that entire villages have been emptied with no prospect of return. He reveals that the Lebanese government, with limited resources, is struggling to shelter and support the displaced population. Mitri emphasises that while Israel targets Hezbollah, it is waging ‘an all-out war against Lebanon’, with civilians paying a heavy price. He warns that the conflict is already regional and could escalate further without an immediate ceasefire.
