The United States is on the brink of a federal government shutdown after the Senate failed to pass a critical funding bill before the end of the fiscal year. A stopgap measure proposed by House Republicans collapsed in the Senate without enough Democratic support, leaving key operations and public services at risk.
President Donald Trump escalated tensions with a controversial AI-generated video mocking Democratic leaders, while also threatening mass public sector layoffs. Democrats, meanwhile, are demanding the restoration of healthcare spending and social protections that have been slashed under Trump’s second term.
If no deal is reached, nonessential government services will halt, hundreds of thousands of workers could go unpaid, and social programs may face delays.
This would be the first US government shutdown since 2019, and could trigger widespread disruption.
