Iran relies on a triad of weapons—kamikaze drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles—rather than a conventional air force or navy, according to military analysis. The Shahid 136 drone, a low-cost kamikaze platform costing around 30,000 to 40,000 dollars, has a range of 50 to 2,000 kilometres and has been produced in tens of thousands. Iran has exported production lines of the Shahid 136 to Russia, where it is called the Geran and used in the Russia-Ukraine war. Iran has deployed these drones against Gulf Cooperation Council countries including the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain in recent days. The country also operates jet-powered cruise missiles like the Saumar, with a range over 1,000 kilometres, and solid and liquid-fuelled ballistic missiles such as the Sejil and Khurramshahr, operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps aerospace forces. Iran’s arsenal includes approximately 5,000 ballistic missiles, 30,000 to 40,000 Shahid 136 drones, and hundreds of cruise missiles, enabling it to counter Israel and the United States despite decades of sanctions.
