A United States submarine sank an Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, confirmed US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The Iranian vessel IRIS Dena was returning from the International Fleet Review 2026 held in Visakhapatnam, India, when it was attacked in international waters. Sri Lankan authorities confirmed at least 80 people on board were killed, with 32 rescued and several bodies recovered from the sea. The injured are being treated at a hospital in Galle. This marks only the fourth instance since the Second World War of a warship being sunk by a submarine. The vessel had participated in the Milan exercise hosted by the Indian Navy and a naval drill in the Bay of Bengal from February 18 to February 25. The incident raises concerns about unrestricted submarine warfare in the Indian Ocean, a critical global maritime artery through which one-fifth of global commerce passes.
