The twenty-one-hour talks between the United States and Iran have collapsed without an agreement, driven by four major fault lines. Washington demanded that Tehran immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping, which Iran rejected to maintain its strategic leverage. The United States also pushed for a complete end to uranium enrichment and the dismantling of Iranian nuclear facilities, a demand Tehran dismissed as a violation of its sovereign rights. Furthermore, the United States sought strict limits on Iran’s missile programme and an end to its funding for proxy groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. Iran refused both demands, citing its security architecture and the need for regional deterrence. Despite the deadlock and the United States putting a final offer on the table, the two-week ceasefire continues to hold. This marks the most serious engagement between the two nations since the Obama-Rouhani outreach of 2013. However, as the United States moves to tighten control over the oil corridor and Iran warns of retaliation, military options remain on the table.
