As tensions rise in West Asia following Iran’s ballistic missile, cruise missile and drone attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council countries over 16 days, the military capabilities of Gulf nations to potentially retaliate come into focus. Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar possess the Storm Shadow cruise missile with a 550-kilometre range and 400-kilogram warhead. Bahrain has the Army Tactical Missile System, a short-range ballistic missile with 350-kilometre range. Saudi Arabia operates the Chinese Wing Loong unmanned combat aerial vehicle with 450-kilogram payload capacity and 30-hour endurance. Most significantly, Saudi Arabia possesses the Chinese Dong Feng 21 ballistic missile with over 2,500-kilometre range, making it the only GCC country with such capability. Despite Iran firing thousands of projectiles at Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, these countries have not yet responded, possibly due to diplomatic considerations.
