The twenty-one-hour peace talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad have completely collapsed, with the American delegation returning empty-handed. Pakistan, acting as the mediator, failed to bring the two sides to a common ground, though the Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister stated they will continue their mediation efforts. The primary reason for the failure was Iran refusing to provide clear, verifiable guarantees that it will not develop nuclear weapons, a demand the United States insisted was non-negotiable. While the American side presented what it called a final and best offer, the Iranian delegation rejected the key terms, holding firm on their enrichment and missile programs. Furthermore, the United States and Israel refused to dilute their security demands. Another major factor in the collapse was a sequencing dispute; Iran demanded immediate sanctions relief, whereas the United States sought prior compliance and an affirmative commitment regarding nuclear weapons. The talks ended with a significant trust deficit remaining between the two nations and no headway made despite extensive discussions.
