An Iranian drone strike targeted the Fujairah Oil Port in the United Arab Emirates on 14th March, marking the first attack on non-US assets in the escalating West Asia conflict. The strategic port in the Gulf of Oman, located 70 nautical miles from the Strait of Hormuz, handles energy volumes equalling roughly 1.7% of global oil demand. UAE air defences intercepted the drone, but falling debris hit the port and set it ablaze. Oil loading operations have since resumed at the crude oil refinery. Iran issued evacuation warnings for three major UAE ports including Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi, and Fujairah, following US strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island. Iran accused the UAE of permitting forces to use their territory to launch strikes, an allegation the UAE strongly denied. The UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed intercepting several ballistic missiles and drones launched from Iran. Global oil markets remain jittery as the conflict threatens critical energy supply routes.
