Peace negotiations between the United States and Iran, held in Islamabad, have collapsed after twenty-one hours of discussions. Pakistan acted as the chief mediator for the diplomatic engagement, which aimed to resolve escalating tensions. The talks ultimately failed due to irreconcilable differences over Iran’s nuclear weapons programme and the strategic management of the Strait of Hormuz. The United States maintained its firm stance against Iran acquiring nuclear capabilities, while the Iranian delegation refused to concede on the issue. Despite the breakdown in negotiations and the departure of the American delegation, a previously agreed two-week ceasefire remains in effect. The Pakistani foreign ministry confirmed its commitment to facilitating future diplomatic efforts, noting that the Iranian delegation has not yet left Islamabad. However, the situation remains highly volatile, with the United States leadership warning that warships are prepared to deploy if diplomatic avenues are completely exhausted. The failure to reach an agreement highlights the deep-seated geopolitical divide between the two nations.
