Iran has threatened to target Israel with newer generation missiles, including hypersonic missiles capable of traveling 14 times the speed of sound. The distance between Tehran and Tel Aviv is approximately 1,600 kilometres, with Iran possessing ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles capable of hitting targets over 2,000 kilometres away. The United States and Israel have deployed a multi-tiered air defence grid including Patriot missile batteries, THAAD systems, Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow 3 interceptors. The US has military bases across Iraq, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia equipped with radar systems, F-15 squadrons, and missile defence batteries. An aircraft carrier strike group is positioned in the Mediterranean Sea. Iran’s strategy involves saturating the defence systems with drones, rockets, and missiles to overwhelm the grid. The multi-layered defence can intercept threats at various altitudes and distances, from Iron Dome’s short-range capability to Arrow 3’s 2,400-kilometre range.
