Iran has expanded the West Asia conflict into the Indian Ocean by firing two ballistic missiles at the joint US-UK military base at Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands. While neither missile struck the target, with one failing mid-flight and the other possibly intercepted according to US claims, the attempt demonstrates Iran’s capability to strike targets roughly 4,000 kilometres from Iranian territory. This represents a substantial leap beyond the previously believed range of around 2,000 kilometres, raising concerns that Iran could potentially target bases in Europe if the war escalates further. Diego Garcia is a central location in the Indian Ocean, hosting a major US-UK base with air and naval capabilities, used as a launch pad for operations across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Leaders from the UAE, UK, France and Germany issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Gulf and the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces, calling on Iran to cease immediately its threats and attacks.
