Iran drew tens of thousands of pro-government demonstrators to the streets Monday in show of power after nationwide protests.
The rally was organized by the Iranian government, and broadcasted on state television, which showed images of demonstrators thronging Tehran toward Enghelab Square in the capital.
State television aired similar images of pro-government demonstrations around the country, trying to signal it had overcome the protests, as claimed by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier in the day.
Nationwide protests in the country sparked by the Islamic Republic’s ailing economy have been putting new pressure on its theocracy.
With the internet down in Iran and phone lines cut off, gauging the demonstrations from abroad has grown more difficult.
Iran’s government has not offered overall casualty figures.
More than 500 protests have taken place across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency reported early Monday.
The death toll had reached at least 544, it said, with more than 10,600 arrests.
The group relies on an activist network inside of Iran for its reporting and has been accurate in past unrest.
