Sonia Gandhi has sharply criticised the Modi government for its silence on the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, calling it an abdication that raises serious questions about India’s foreign policy credibility. In an article published in Indian Express, she questioned why New Delhi refrained from condemning either the killing or the violation of Iranian sovereignty. She accused Prime Minister Modi of initially condemning Iran’s retaliatory strike without addressing the preceding attacks and later limiting his response to general remarks about dialogue and diplomacy. Gandhi cited Article 2.4 of the UN Charter, stating that targeted killings of serving heads of state violate fundamental principles of international law. She demanded the issue be debated when Parliament reconvenes. BJP sources responded, stating that India’s calibrated response reflects responsible diplomacy, not silence, and that the country has consistently called for restraint, respect for sovereignty and de-escalation, particularly given millions of Indians living across the Gulf region.
