Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed in strikes while at his office in Iran, according to reports. His daughter, son-in-law, and other family members were also killed. Iran has announced 40 days of national mourning. Tehran has vowed revenge, stating that the crime will not go unanswered, and has warned of the most intense offensive operation to begin soon. Iran has launched fresh strikes targeting military installations and assets in UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait, including attacks on hotels in Dubai. The strikes have created immediate uncertainty in Tehran over succession and control of Iran’s arsenal. Washington and Tel Aviv have framed the operation, termed Operation Epic Fury, as targeting Iran’s nuclear, missile, and command capacity, as well as formal regime change. Reza Pahlavi has urged Iranians to rise up, though experts question whether internal unrest can achieve regime change without ground invasion.
