An explosion rocked the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday after Israel ordered an unprecedented evacuation of the entire southern section of the Lebanese capital, marking a major escalation in its campaign against Iran-backed Hezbollah. The Israeli military carried out 26 waves of airstrikes overnight, targeting Hezbollah command centres and weapons storage. Since Monday, Israeli attacks have killed 217 people and wounded 798, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Tens of thousands of residents have been displaced, with people sleeping on streets for safety. Israel claims it struck an Iranian airbase and three Hezbollah sites in Lebanon. The escalation follows renewed regional tensions after missile strikes and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this week, prompting Hezbollah to fire missiles and drones into Israel for the first time in over a year.
