External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has confirmed that the Iranian ship Iris Lavan has been docked at Kochi port on humanitarian grounds. The vessel, carrying 183 crew members including many young cadets, reported technical problems and requested port access on February 28, which India approved on March 1. Jaishankar stated that allowing the ship to dock in difficulties was the humane thing to do, and India was guided by that principle. The crew members are now accommodated at naval facilities. This development comes days after another Iranian warship, Iris Dina, was sunk 40 nautical miles off the coast of Galle, Sri Lanka, in the Indian Ocean by a US submarine through a torpedo strike. Government sources have categorically rejected allegations that India shared intelligence with the United States about Iris Dina, calling these claims baseless and preposterous. The Indian Navy has deployed two ships for search and rescue operations following the Iris Dina incident.
