Iran’s Intelligence Minister Esmaeil Khatib has been assassinated, as confirmed by the Iranian president who described it as a cowardly assassination. The killing occurred within hours of the assassination of Iran’s Security Chief Ali Larijani. According to Iran, family members of several leaders have also been killed in strikes attributed to Israel. The assassinations have raised questions about information leaks, reportedly triggering a massive crackdown on spy networks suspected of aiding Israel. A long list of Iranian officials have been assassinated, including the defence minister, the revolutionary guard head, and the armed forces chief. Khatib, who served as minister since 2021, was a senior cleric, hardline figure, and key aide to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A veteran of the revolutionary guard and intelligence, he headed the agency during the 2022-23 unrest in Iran and was sanctioned by the US for cyber and human rights abuses.
