Iran will hold a runoff presidential election pitting Pezeshkian against Saeed Jalili. Pezeshkian is a little-known reformist, while Jalili is a hardline ex-nuclear negotiator. The poll results showed the lowest-ever poll turnout in the Islamic Republic’s history. More than 60% of voters cast no ballot in the race that saw Pezeshkian beat Jalili. Pertinent to note, Saeed Jalili competed alongside two other hardliners. With Jalili alone in facing the doctor, Pezeshkian’s campaign would need to draw voters. Public anger has hardened following years of economic hardships and mass protests. Of the 24.5 million votes cast in Friday’s election, Masoud Pezeshkian got 10.4 million. Election spokesperson Mohsen Eslami said Saeed Jalili received 9.4 million votes. Iran election: Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf got 3.3 million votes. Iran election: Shiite cleric Mostafa Pourmohammadi had over 206,000 votes. Iranian law requires that a winner gets more than 50% of all votes cast. There has been only one other runoff presidential election in Iran’s history. In 2005, hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defeated ex-President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Since 1979 Islamic Revolution, women calling for radical change been barred from running. The vote itself will have no oversight from internationally recognized monitors. Voter apathy in the Shiite theocracy: The overall turnout was 39.9%, as per the results.
