Unnithan noted that capturing Kharg Island and other Iranian-controlled islands would be ‘easier said than done’ due to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) defenses, including missiles, fast attack craft, unmanned surface vessels, tunnels, and mines. He compared a potential campaign to the island-hopping strategy employed by the United States during World War II, warning it would be ‘equally bloody.’ Unnithan observed that President Trump ‘is running out of patience’ and ‘needs a big win’ before his planned meeting with President Xi Jinping in mid-May, suggesting the United States is rushing troops into theater to achieve that objective.
