In an exclusive interview with India Today’s Marya Shakil on News Today, senior parliamentarian and former diplomat Dr Shashi Tharoor discusses India’s strategic stance on the West Asia conflict. Dr Tharoor argues that India must prioritise regional stability and its economic interests, stating, ‘peace is in our national interest,’ regardless of who brokers the deal. Addressing the Islamabad-hosted peace talks between the US and Iran, he describes Pakistan as a ‘diplomatic fig leaf’ for Washington and Tehran to de-escalate without losing face. While acknowledging India’s historical distrust of Pakistan, Dr Tharoor suggests a ‘mature view’ is necessary as the war impacts India’s energy security and the Global South. He cautions that if the current mediation fails, India should be prepared to leverage its strategic autonomy and unique ties with both the US and Iran. Dr Tharoor also highlights the diminishing role of the UN Security Council in global peace and security, urging India to move beyond being a passive observer to becoming an active stakeholder in the emerging world order.
