An interstellar visitor just survived a close brush with our sun — and scientists captured something unprecedented.
Comet 3I/ATLAS, a traveler from another star system, was tracked before and after its October 30 solar flyby. For the first time, astronomers precisely measured atomic nickel and iron emissions from an interstellar comet across perihelion.
These heavy elements are critical building blocks of rocky planets.
The data offers rare insight into the “metallicity” of another star system — essentially its planet-making ingredients. But there’s a twist. After its close encounter with the sun, 3I/ATLAS showed chemistry surprisingly similar to solar system comets. Methanol, ethane, dust — familiar signatures.
That means its outer layers were processed by solar radiation. The pristine interior remains hidden beneath a sun-baked crust.
Even so, this is a breakthrough. Only one solar system comet has ever provided comparable metal tracking data. Now scientists have a new pathway to decode how alien worlds form.
