Scientists have spotted a rare and puzzling behaviour in interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as it approached the Sun. The comet’s unusual anti-tail was seen quivering every 7.75 hours, stretching an astonishing 500,000 kilometres into space. Detailed observations suggest the motion is linked to the rotation of the comet’s nucleus and active jets near its surface. This marks the first time such periodic jet modulation has been detected in an interstellar object, deepening the mystery around visitors from beyond our solar system.
