International News Updates LIVE: Trump Tariff Threat On BRICS |Israel-Syria Ceasefire |AI Crash News
US President Donald Trump has reiterated a threat to impose a 10% tariff on BRICS nations, accusing the bloc of challenging the dominance of the US dollar. Trump characterized BRICS as a "fast-fading group," a claim countered by the group’s history and recent expansion. The economic bloc, originally conceptualized by Goldman Sachs in 2001, has grown to include new members such as Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Ethiopia. It now represents approximately 37 percent of the global GDP and around 50 percent of the world’s population. A correspondent noted, "President Donald Trump has reasons to feel worried about the de-dollarization concept, because if dollars is the global currency. And if countries increasingly start trading in their own national currencies or started having, you know, replacing dollars, then he has the reasons to worry about it." This provides context for the repeated tariff threats against the expanding economic group.
The chair of the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has stated that recent media reports concerning the probe into the Air India crash in Ahmedabad are premature and speculative. The NTSB has backed the investigation being conducted by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). This follows the crash of an Air India Boeing Dreamliner on June 12th, which resulted in 260 fatalities. An initial report from the AAIB noted confusion in the cockpit regarding the fuel engine cutoff switches. Some international media outlets used this information and cockpit voice recordings to speculate about the cause. The NTSB chair, Jennifer Homendy, has now endorsed the AAIB’s call for restraint, stating that such reports are "premature and speculative" and confirming that the AAIB is the sole source for official statements on the ongoing investigation.
US President Donald Trump has once again claimed he mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, preventing a larger conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations. He stated, "planes were being shot out of the air… five jets were shot down, actually… we got it solved through trade." This assertion, which Trump said involved telling both nations he would not make a trade deal if they continued fighting, has been made over 20 times. However, the Government of India has consistently refuted this claim. As reported, India’s External Affairs Minister and Foreign Secretary have stated there was no such role played by the US. India maintains that the ceasefire was agreed upon at the level of the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) after multiple calls from the Pakistani DGMO.
