Senior lawyer Indira Jaising spoke candidly about judicial corruption, transparency and recent controversies surrounding school textbooks mentioning corruption in the judiciary. She stated, ‘I frankly don’t know whether to laugh or cry at what’s going on.’ Jaising acknowledged that corruption has existed in the judiciary but emphasised the need for transparent systems to address it. She called for town hall meetings involving the public, media, bar and judiciary to discuss these issues openly. Jaising suggested that recent attacks on the judiciary, including statements by former officials and NCERT textbook references, are part of a pattern. She said, ‘I believe that there is a motivation at play which needs to be exposed.’ While acknowledging the seriousness of corruption allegations, she criticised the lack of contextualisation in textbooks and called for greater transparency and public participation in judicial processes.
