In this special report, Business Today Associate Editor Chetan Bhutani reveals that the Civil Aviation Ministry has briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the ongoing IndiGo flight chaos. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is in direct contact with IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, pressing for an early restoration of services. Bhutani reports that the airline faces heavy penalties for ‘regulatory noncompliance’, consumer impact, and breach of public interest. While IndiGo has requested a relaxation of Flight Time Duty Limitations (FTDL) norms, citing their rigidity compared to global standards, the airline has sought 10 days to stabilize operations by December 15. The government has emphasized that the airline will be charged for these lapses, marking a significant intervention in the aviation sector.
