IndiGo Crisis: Ex-DGCA M.R. Shivaraman Blames Board For ‘Unacceptable’ 8.5% On-Time Performance

In a heated debate on the ongoing IndiGo airlines crisis, former DGCA M.R. Shivaraman holds the airline’s board of directors ‘squarely responsible’ for the operational meltdown that saw on-time performance plummet to 8.5% in December 2025. Shivaraman argues that independent directors failed to act on major policy changes regarding crew safety. Captain Sam Thomas, President of the Airline Pilots Association of India (ALPA India), supports this view, describing the relationship between IndiGo and its pilots as ‘exploitative’ due to inadequate staffing despite fleet expansion. He highlights that pilot unions have raised these issues repeatedly but were ignored. Captain Sanjay Gupta, a veteran pilot, adds that the dilution of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) has led to severe fatigue, prompting many pilots to quit prematurely. The discussion underscores the critical link between pilot rest, staffing levels, and passenger safety.
