India’s Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and the Axiom 4 crew have commenced their journey back to Earth after an 18-day science mission on the International Space Station. The Dragon capsule is expected to splashdown off the coast of California. During his time in orbit, Shukla conveyed a message of national pride, stating, "India looks ambitious, confident, fearless and proud. Sare jahan se achcha, this is just the beginning for India." The mission was scientifically significant, involving over 60 experiments, seven of which were from India, focusing on areas like microgravity’s effect on plant growth, muscle regeneration, and bone health. This mission marks the first time an Indian astronaut has been to the ISS, 41 years after Rakesh Sharma’s space flight. The experience and data gathered are considered crucial for India’s upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, which aims for its first test in 2027.
