Former National Security Advisor and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon spoke to India Today about India’s response to the West Asia crisis and its broader foreign policy approach. He criticised India’s consistent silence on major global issues over the last five years, stating, ‘I think ultimately, it diminishes the value of your voice. People stop listening to you if you’re silent.’ Menon found India’s five-day silence after Ali Khamenei’s assassination ‘inexplicable,’ especially given India’s direct interests in the region with 10 million citizens living across the Gulf. He argued that silence is not strategic when oil prices, LPG supplies, and fertiliser imports are immediately affected. Menon noted that India has stayed silent on multiple crises, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Gaza conflict. He suggested India should focus on practical measures like finding alternative energy sources and engaging in open parliamentary debate on the crisis. Menon emphasised that previous Indian governments expressed their views on international conflicts through various means, maintaining credibility with all sides.
