International Monetary Fund (IMF) Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath on Friday said that India’s economic trajectory has shown better performance than expectations. Speaking exclusively to India Today TV’s Director Rahul Kanwal, she said, "Firstly, India’s growth did much better than we expected in the last fiscal year and that those carry over are affecting our forecast for this year. The other factor is we see private consumption recovering. Last year, if you look at private consumption growth, it was around 4 per cent, we expect that to increase, driven by the recovery in rural consumption…" She quoted examples of increase in vehicle sales and better monsoon to support her argument. In her interview, she also touched upon the political turmoil in Bangladesh, saying that the IMF is working closely with the South Asian nation and is "committed to work with the interim government".
