Indian Army LIVE: Successful trials of the Akash Prime missile carried out in the Ladakh sector
On July 16, 2025, the Indian Army successfully conducted high‑altitude tests of the Akash Prime surface‑to‑air missile in the Ladakh sector, exceeding 15,000 ft. The upgraded system, armed with an indigenous active radio-frequency seeker, scored two direct hits on fast-moving aerial targets in a rarefied environment—withstanding extreme cold and thin air.
Developed by DRDO and built under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, Akash Prime marks a significant milestone in India’s layered air defence strategy. Already effective in countering aerial threats during Operation Sindoor, this latest trial demonstrates its operational reliability against drones and missile incursions from adversaries like Pakistan and China .
The trial involved the Army Air Defence Corps and DRDO scientists, validating that the missile maintains precision even in extreme high-altitude conditions. Following this success, India plans to raise third and fourth Akash Prime regiments, elevating its air defence readiness along sensitive borders.
