Indian Air Force Retires MiG-21 Fighter Jets After 62 Years of Service | India Today News

The Indian Air Force is holding a farewell ceremony in Chandigarh for its MiG-21 fighter jets, marking the end of a 62-year era. The last two squadrons of the aircraft, which served as the workhorses of the IAF, are being retired. The event featured a flypast with formations and a dogfight demonstration involving Jaguars and MiG-21s. The MiG-21 played a significant role in the 1965, 1971, and 1999 wars, as well as the 2025 Operation Sindhur Sneha. For many pilots, the journey with the aircraft was personal. As Captain Shubhanshu Shukla stated, "it is a personal journey, you know, of my growth along with it." The retirement of the jets reduces the IAF’s squadron strength to 29, with the indigenous LCA Tejas expected to take on its role. The decommissioned MiG-21s will become museum pieces or be scrapped.
