Critics are warning that Pakistan’s 27th Amendment delivers unprecedented power into the hands of Army Chief Asim Munir and President Asif Ali Zardari.
At the amendment’s core is a new unified defence command that constitutionally elevates General Asim Munir, placing all three armed services under a single leader.
The amendment goes further, granting lifetime legal immunity for actions taken in that role. It removes any future judicial oversight over the army chief’s decisions.
