External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araghchi, following the sinking of an Iranian warship by the United States in international waters near Sri Lanka. The Iranian warship had participated in India’s International Fleet Review and Milan exercises in Visakhapatnam from 15 February to 25 February before returning home. The vessel was torpedoed approximately 300 kilometres south of Cape Comorin in international waters, outside India’s territorial jurisdiction and exclusive economic zone. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi described the warship as a guest of the Indian Navy. This marks the second conversation between the two ministers since the onset of the conflict involving Israeli and US strikes on Iran. India maintains approximately 9,000 citizens in Iran and around 9.5 million in the wider West Asian region, prompting concerns about their safety and potential evacuation.
