India Today Probe: Rajasthan's Drug Scandal, Pills That Harm, A System That Fails

The Rajasthan Drug Controller Department has uncovered that medicines intended to heal are endangering patient health. An India Today investigation into the department’s working found that while drug samples are tested and reports on substandard batches are filed, the required subsequent action is lacking. Large quantities of failed drugs, including antibiotics, steroids, painkillers, and cardiac medication, were sold by various pharmaceutical companies before being detected. For example, over 1 lakh antibiotic tablets from one company were sold. By law, failed samples should lead to court cases and reports must be escalated to the Central Drug Laboratory in Kolkata for a nationwide ban, but this did not happen. The investigation highlights a systemic failure where by the time any action is taken, many have already consumed the potentially harmful drugs, making "every pill could be a potential gamble with life."
