A nationwide pharma crackdown is underway related to cough syrups linked to the deaths of children in states including Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. An India Today investigation at the Sresan Pharma plant in Kanchipuram, the manufacturer of the banned Coldrif syrup, uncovered multiple operational lapses. The report from the facility showed a lack of proper ventilation, rusted equipment, and chemical solvents stored in direct sunlight, contrary to safety warnings. The probe also highlighted the presence of diethylene glycol, an industrial solvent not meant for human consumption. A reporter at the site observed, “As soon as we entered the killer plant, we could smell the stench that was coming out of that plant, absolutely ill maintained.” The owner of Sresan Pharma is absconding, and Tamil Nadu’s drug controller department has issued a show-cause notice to the company.
