India Today has gained exclusive access to the Korwa factory in Amethi, where the AK-203 assault rifle is being manufactured through a joint venture between India and Russia. This project is a significant step in the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, aiming to replace the army’s aging INSAS rifles. The goal is to achieve 100% indigenization by December this year, after which the rifle will be named ‘Sher’. An official stated, "We are making a rifle which is the best in the world, Kalashnikov AK-203." The Rs. 5,200 crore project aims to produce over 6 lakh rifles, with 48,000 already delivered to the Indian Army and another 7,000 expected by August 15th. The AK-203 is capable of firing 700 rounds per minute with an 800-meter range.
