Karnataka author Banu Mushtaq and translator Deepa Bhashti have won the International Booker Prize for fiction this year. Their book ‘Heart Lamp’ is a collection of 12 short stories chronicling the lives of women in southern India, focusing on Muslim and Dalit women. Mushtaq, who started as a journalist and became a lawyer and activist, sees her writing as a form of activism. She dedicates the award to her country and hopes it will inspire more women to speak out for their rights.
