Nikhil Pahwa, founder of MediaNama, argued that AI companies have ‘run amok’ by scraping personal data without consent, creating a ‘fate accompli’ where privacy is sacrificed for innovation. Niharika Karanjawala emphasized the difficulty of ‘unringing the bell’ once data is leaked, calling for stricter liability frameworks. Professor Ramakrishnan discussed the ‘BharatGPT’ initiative, advocating for data provenance and sovereignty. The panel concluded that with current regulations lagging, the burden of privacy protection falls primarily on user vigilance, as both government surveillance systems like NATGRID and private AI models continue to expand data collection without robust oversight.
