At the India Today Infrastructure Conclave, Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam laid out India’s bold aviation roadmap. The country plans to expand from 164 operational airports today to 210 by 2029 — and over 400 by 2047 — nearly adding one airport every month. Passenger traffic is projected to surge from 230 million to 1.3 billion by 2047, while the commercial fleet has grown from 395 aircraft in 2014 to around 860 today, with Indian carriers placing orders for over 1,500 aircraft.
Under the revamped UDAN scheme, connectivity will extend to 120 new destinations, benefiting nearly 4 crore passengers. Over ₹1 lakh crore is set to be invested in airport infrastructure over the next five years. With 90+ airports running on green energy, India’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel roadmap targets 1% blending by 2027, 2% by 2028, and 5% by 2030. Meanwhile, the MRO sector is expected to grow from USD 2.5 billion to USD 7 billion by 2035 — marking a transformative phase for Indian aviation.
