India has achieved a historic milestone in its three-stage nuclear power program as the 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam successfully attained criticality. This development marks India’s official entry into the second stage of the vision conceived by Dr Homi Bhabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the achievement, stating it reflects India’s scientific capabilities and is a decisive step towards harnessing thorium reserves. Speaking to India Today, Dr Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, explained that fast breeder reactors are essential for India’s energy independence as they produce more fuel than they consume. He noted that India is now only the second country after Russia to operate a commercial-scale FBR. Dr Kakodkar emphasised that this technology is crucial for transitioning to clean energy and meeting the fourfold increase in energy demand required for a ‘Viksit Bharat’. He further advocated for parallel development of the third stage to leverage India’s vast thorium resources, the largest in the world.
