India now ranks second in the world for the number of overweight and obese children, according to a recent global report. By 2040, an estimated 56 million children could be affected if current trends continue. The World Obesity Atlas reveals that 41 million Indian children aged 5 to 11 live with high BMI, with 14 million classified as obese. Childhood obesity increases the risk of early onset diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and metabolic conditions. Experts cite sedentary lifestyles, high-calorie diets, and lack of awareness as key drivers. At least 120 million school-age children globally are expected to show early signs of chronic disease by 2040. Medical professionals warn that up to 50 percent of obese children develop insulin resistance, and 20 to 25 percent face hypertension risks. A recent government report also indicates high triglyceride levels among Indian children, increasing heart disease risk. Experts recommend limiting processed foods, reducing screen time, encouraging physical activity, and fostering healthy family habits.
