India Must Focus on Making Weapons, Not Just Processes: Baba Kalyan, MD of Bharat Forges
At R Defence’s Forces First Conclave, Baba Kalyan, MD of Bharat Forges, talked about the global supply challenges the defence sector is currently facing. He said that getting any supplies out of Europe for the next 10–15 years is almost impossible due to low capacity, worsened by the Ukraine war, the Israel–Hamas conflict, and over 90 other global conflicts. He praised the success of Operation Sindoor, which concluded in less than 90 hours, crediting India’s smart planning, execution, and superior equipment.
He noted that even the United States, after sending artillery shells to Ukraine, is struggling to produce 15,000 shells a month. As a result, he suggested that India must shift from being a process-driven to a product-driven nation, speeding up production timelines. With AI and digital tools, he said, products like Infantry Combat Vehicles can be modernised within 18–24 months, not seven years.
