An acute LPG shortage is affecting hotels, restaurants, and crematoriums across India, with Bengaluru hotels reporting stock sufficient for only 12 to 72 hours. Chennai has also flagged a commercial LPG shortage, with hotels demanding uninterrupted supply from the centre and state governments. In Pune, the largest crematorium has gas available for only two cremations, requiring 18 kg of LPG each, forcing the use of electric fires. The National Restaurant Association has warned of closures, with several Bengaluru restaurants shutting down. In Punjab, oil marketing companies have suspended non-household LPG supply. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed refineries to ramp up production, prioritising domestic household supply. A 25-day inter-booking gap has been introduced to prevent hoarding, up from 21 days. The government is exploring alternate sources, including securing supplies from the United States, and has formed a panel to address industry and restaurant needs.
