In a special broadcast analysing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel, former diplomat Ambassador Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty and Jason Isaacson, Chief Policy and Political Affairs Officer at the American Jewish Committee, discussed the evolving India-Israel relationship. Chakravarty emphasised that ‘India has never ever agreed to any alliance, particularly a security alliance, but we are always open to partnerships,’ highlighting India’s commitment to strategic autonomy. He identified the bilateral dimension, counter-terrorism cooperation, and India’s reiteration of support for a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue as key takeaways from the visit. Isaacson described the relationship as a ‘special strategic partnership’ of enormous significance for Israel, noting 16 agreements signed during the visit. Both experts discussed the potential for initiatives like I2U2 and IMEC to strengthen regional ties, whilst Chakravarty noted that India has historically been the only country with no history of anti-Semitism, a unique bond appreciated by Israel.
