In a significant diplomatic milestone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron elevated the India-France relationship to a ‘Special Global Strategic Partnership’ during a summit in Mumbai. Former Indian Ambassador to France, Mohan Kumar, described the move as a ‘paradigmatic shift’ in defense ties, moving beyond a traditional buyer-seller model. A key highlight includes the agreement for 114 Rafale aircraft, with 96 to be manufactured in India featuring 60 percent indigenous content. The leaders also virtually inaugurated an Airbus H125 helicopter assembly line in Karnataka, intended for both domestic use and global exports. Ambassador Kumar noted that the partnership now includes a ‘Horizon 2047’ roadmap overseen annually by foreign ministers, expanding cooperation into AI, digital science, and health. Additionally, the program covered the second round of US-Iran talks in Geneva and the swearing-in of Tarique Rahman as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh, marking the country’s first male premier in 35 years.
