India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishra visited the Iranian embassy and signed the condolence book following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, six days after the incident. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar also spoke to his Iranian counterpart Dr Sayyed Abbas Araqchi, urging dialogue and restraint. Jaishankar had earlier spoken to Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and may speak to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. India has emphasised that military action is not the solution and that all parties must come to the dialogue table. The widening conflict is now impacting India’s economic interests, with concerns over potential disruption in the Strait of Hormuz affecting oil supplies. Indian tankers will reportedly be allowed passage through the strait. Questions remain about whether India was informed about recent actions in the Indian Ocean region.
