India First Debate: Bangladesh Demands Sheikh Hasina's Extradition From India—What Will India Do?

This special report focuses on the political turmoil in Bangladesh after a court under the interim government of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in absentia. The Dhaka administration is now demanding her extradition from India, where she has been since August 2024, stating that a refusal would be considered an act of enmity. In the debate, Professor Brahma Chellaney argues, ‘an unconstitutionally installed regime cannot seek the extradition of someone who was ousted.’ The panel, including former diplomat Ambassador Rajiv Sikri and Professor Ayanjit Sen, discusses the legality of the verdict by the International Crimes Tribunal, the complex process of extradition, and the security implications for India amidst what experts on the programme call a takeover by radical Islamists in Bangladesh.
