In the village of Tiruchendurai in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli district, families are grappling with the classification of their land, including a 1,500-year-old Chola temple, as Waqf property. This situation has left many residents, who have lived there for generations, unable to sell their land without approval from the Waqf Board.
The Waqf Board is one of the largest landowners in India, following the Indian Railways and the Indian Armed Forces. Speaking to So South, India Today TV’s sister channel, the villagers expressed their concerns and uncertainties about their future in this ongoing dispute.
The matter was also raised in Parliment by Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju during the discussion on Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The Bill, which was vehemently rejected by Muslim organisations and opposition parties, has been sent to a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee.
