India has commissioned INS Aridhaman, its third indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), marking a major boost to the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities.
Built in Visakhapatnam, the 7,000-tonne submarine is an advanced upgrade of the Arihant-class and is equipped with eight vertical launch system (VLS) tubes, capable of carrying K-15 and K-4 nuclear missiles.
With this induction, India now has three operational SSBNs under its Strategic Forces Command—strengthening its second-strike capability, a key pillar of nuclear deterrence. The development comes at a time of rising geopolitical tensions, especially in the Indian Ocean and near the Strait of Hormuz.
